Way back when [1978],at a party,playing records on a friends stereo,someone pulls this record out i´ve never
seen or heard of [In Trance]. The blonde girl with the stratocaster between her legs.The cover is cool. Always wanted a strat for myself.We start the record, "Top of the bill". Cool song,I thought,but not that different than the rest of the rock music out at the time.Then on comes "Sun in my hand",Oh Man,I´ve never heard anybody play the guitar like this,[one of my favorite Scorpions songs to this day]."Lifes like a river",very beautiful,I thought to myself,Who is this guy? 1979 avery dear friend shows me his copy [US copy,with the clean cover]of Virgin Killer
I asked him to play it for me."Pictured life" comes on and I´m like,"Thats him,that is the sound I remember from that party".Next "Catch your train",Man,listen to this solo,play it again.All reverby and he just KILLS the high strings.I will never forget this.I permanently borrowed my friend´s copy of V.K.[I later bought him the import version with the "dirty cover"].After reading the liner notes I found the guitar player was Ulrich Roth.The music of these songs are FOREVER etched in my brain,the solos are so "singable",the MELODY influance me to this very day in my guitar work.If not for Uli,I would not have studied music theory,and would sound like every other "rock guitarist" out there.My personal favorite "Sails of Charon",Uli could you BLOW MY MIND any further. I think not.If this sounds like mindless drivel I´m sorry, but Uli has done more for me than a "Whole lotta" songs have.It is a CRIME that the Scorps backlog is out of print.[I hfound "Fly to the rainbow" "In trance" "Virgin killer" "Taken by force" "Tokyo tapes" on Amazon for a very high price [understandably].I would LOVE to sit and talk with Uli about ,Uli´s tone,the arpeggios on "Sails of Charon"[still kicks my ass],Dominant 7´s and Mixolydian mode,[Backstage queen],and extended barre chords.

Wowwwwwwww!!!!!!!!! Saw Uli live for the first time yesterday evening 10-11-06 in Basel!!!!!!!
the audience was scarce but energetic, cheering and adoring. Uli gave great show. Francis superbe as always and so the rest of the band. Highlights to Olaf Senkbeil on vocals and Ferdy Doernberg on keybords and guitar. Michael Eree on drums is also magnificent. Here´s a set list in no order:

I recently experienced another concert from ULI at UCLA on may 27/06 in west holywood and it was such a great honor and pleasure to see this man make magic with his guitar I don´t know where he gets all that energy to play the way he jammed that night,the show lasted four hours with a 15 minute break it was an unforgetable night,I,ll be ready to check him out again next time he comes and thank you for having this websites available take care and rock on!

I discovered Uli in 1979 while I was serving in the navy, when on a hunch I picked up the Virgin Killer album. I was totally blown away by the incredible facility and vision he possesed. The fact that such a trmendously gifted individual could fall through the cracks of the mainstream musical conscience to the extent he has over the years, serves as a sad commentary on the sorry state of affairs in the music industry today. In my opinion this man is the most talented musician out there today (let alone the most talented guitarist) Heres to many more productive years from this one of a kind musician.

I first listened to Uli in the late 70´s with the Scorpions and he totally blew me away - it wasn´t until 1983 that i saw him play live at the Hummingbird Theatre in Birmingham with Electric Sun. He was so awesome i still think back to that gig today. When he played Polar Nights the whole audience erupted - he was fantastic. I saw him play many times after that with Electric Sun in Germany and all over the UK. Me and some friends even got backstage at Newcastle City Hall and Leeds Uni.
All in all Uli is a superb musician and deserves ultimate respect. God bless him for many more years.

I grew up listening to Uli Roth with the Scorpions and later with Electric Sun. To this day, I believe he is the best guitar player I have ever heard in my life. I havenever heard anyone come even close to the kinds of solos he did in songs like Catch Your Train, or on the Firewind Album. The Scorpions were never the same to me once he left the band. I am 42 years old now but still somehow stuck in the mid 70´s when Uli Roth was my idol. It would be a dream to see him hook up again with the Scorpions.
