Review G3 Copenhagen31th May: Denmark, Copenhagen, KB Hall.

Uli was recently on the road for his first rock tour in many years where he played on the G3-tour with Joe Satriani and Michel Schenker.

I saw Uli play on in Copenhagen the 31:st of May. A great show but a little too short. The showed lasted only 45 minutes but he did some great numbers, both from Scorpions (Polar Nights) and Electric Sun (Hiroshima) Both with great vocals performed by Liz Vandall. He also played a  part (the end part) of Earthquake and some classical stuff from Paganini, Vivaldi (The Four Seasons) and Beethoven (Ode to Joy). But most of all, I want to mention his first number, "The G3 Overture", and that one was amazing. I do hope that one will be released one day. Then followed Schenker and Satriani and I will leave that to someone else to write about. At the end, all three of them appeared on stage and did two numbers together, one from BB King and the other one from Hendrix (Vodoo Chile). It was an enchanted evening, and it was great to see Uli play live again. This was my sixth concert with Uli, and I definitely hope that it wasn't the last.

Review Uli / Ufo Tour Newcastle 23-11-00 Newcastle Apollo

I had the good fortune to see Uli in concert supporting UFO last week in Newcastle. It was a blistering display, usually Newcastle City Hall is not a great place for support bands, but Uli seems to have a very loyal following there. The last time he played was 83 on the Astral skies tour, which I saw and enjoyed. Every seat in the house was taken apart from a few and the reception he got was heart warming. He played like a dream, at the end he asked what people wanted to hear, he played Polar Nights, Sails of Charon, Dark lady as he said "just for memories sake" played "I'm a river" from Beyond the astral skies. Some wonderful Vivaldi stuff, it give me shivers to listen to him play.

After the gig at Newcastle I wandered out to the entrance to see if any videos of Uli were available in the merchandising and he was stood signing autographs for a large group of people. I smiled at him and nodded and he approached me and said "have we met before I feel you are familiar" I said "we met in the late 70's and later in Germany when I played in the Pauline Gillan Band" Now I am not saying he would remember me but for him to take time out to chat was very nice, he said he was enjoying playing and hoped to be back in Newcastle again very soon.

Everytime I have met him and chatted to him, seen him play, it leaves me feeling strange, I can't explain what it is, perhaps it is something in his playing that I find a little sad, or it moves me so much I feel drained or that calm dignified way he deals with people, maybe it makes me realise we should all try to be a little more like that, rather than the shallow way a lot of people live there lives. Oh no he has turned me into a philosopher.

I had a strange moment when UFO were onstage, Uli came out from the dressing rooms and walked up the outside isle as UFO were charging through Rock bottom, he stopped smiled at me then stood chatting to a boy in a wheelchair, called over a security guard and the guard then moved the boy to a better view point to see UFO, I'm not sure what the conversation was but a lovely gesture.

He stood watched Schenker go through his paces and then walked slowly back to the dressing room. As I said a strange moment, I wondered what he was thinking as he watched Schenker,I wondered what it must be like to be such a great guitarist then watch another guitarist who really isn't in the same league headline the gig. Although I never imagine he would compare something as trivial as that.

I love UFO but felt strangely flat after seeing Uli play, I still can't explain it but, Schenker and Co did not seem to be relevant at all, very strange. He is a very very special musician and man, it will be a great shame if he is not recognised as an inovator, after all I suspect there would be no Malmsteen, Satriani, Marty Friedman etc without Uli. As you can imagine seeing the Scorps in the late 70's I am 45 years old, but to see him play again, made me feel like a teenager!!
